The SAAV Cleat is an accessory that facilitates the installation of Measurand's SAAV and SAAV Extend instruments. The SAAV Cleat is a support tool designed for securely suspending a ShapeArray in the casing while attaching fiberglass extension tubes or SAAV Extend extension lifts during the installation process.

The SAAV Cleat consists of a right and left aluminum bracket, an aluminum support block, an aluminum insert lift, two aluminum extension plates, and a retention pin. It is reconfigured for use with fiberglass extension tubes or SAAV Extend lift extensions by changing an included insert.

NOTE: If the SAAV Cleat is to be used in a tight corner, you may remove the Extension Plates for 70 mm and 85 mm outer diameter (OD) casings using a 5/32” hex key. DO NOT remove the plates when using casings with OD greater than 85 mm as there is a risk of the SAAV Cleat falling into the casing.

Figure 2: Extension Plates can be removed from the SAAV Cleat

Usage of the SAAV Cleat is similar regardless of whether it is being used with fiberglass extension tubes or with SAAV Extend lift extensions. Detailed usage instructions for each application are provided below.

Installing Extension Lifts with SAAV Cleat

To use the SAAV Cleat for supporting SAAV Extend lift extensions, you must have the Extend Insert installed. If not already installed, the Extend Insert can be secured into place using a 5/32” hex key.

WARNING: You must ensure that the Extend insert is installed on the SAAV Cleat when supporting SAAV Extend base arrays or extension lifts. Without the insert, the SAAV Extend will not be supported and could fall into the casing.

Figure 3: Installing the Extend insert onto the SAAV Cleat

Step 1 - Remove the Retention Pin

Before the SAAV Cleat can be used to support an SAAV Extend base array or lift extensions, the retention pin must be removed. Unclasp the wire on the retention pin and remove it from the SAAV Cleat.

Step 2 - Slide SAAV Cleat Onto the ShapeArray

Slide the SAAV Cleat onto the SAAV Extend under the connector of the base array or the topmost extension lift attached to the array.

Figure 5: SAAV Cleat in position on SAAV Extend connector

Slip the retention pin back into the SAAV Cleat and lock it with the wire clasp. Rest the assembled SAAV Cleat on top of the borehole casing and rest the connector of the base array or extension lift in the slot of the insert. The weight of the SAAV Extend can now be supported by the SAAV Cleat at the casing.

Step 3 - Add Lift Extension or SAAV Extend Top Assembly

With the SAAV Cleat and instrument resting on the top of the casing, align the lift extension connectors and mate them together.

NOTE: The installation steps are the same for SAAV Extend lift extensions and SAAV Extend top assemblies

Hand tighten the brass nut to secure the connection. With the retention pin in place in the SAAV Cleat, one may use two hands to mate the connectors.

Step 4 - Repeat for Each Lift Extension to be Added

Repeat steps 1 through 3 until the desired number of lift extensions have been added and the SAAV Extend top assembly has been reconnected.

Installing Fiberglass Extension Tubes with SAAV Cleat

To use the SAAV Cleat for supporting fiberglass extension tubes, it must be reconfigured by removing the Extend Insert. To remove the Extend Insert, us a 5/32” hex key. You must also ensure that a fiberglass extension tube coupler has been attached to the top end of the tube to be supported.

Figure 9: Installing the Extend insert onto the SAAV Cleat

WARNING: You must ensure that the Extend insert is installed on the SAAV Cleat when supporting SAAV Extend base arrays or extension lifts. Without the insert, the SAAV Extend will not be supported and could fall into the casing. Care should be taken not to lose the Extend Insert if it is removed for use with fiberglass extension tube installation.

Step 1 - Remove the Retention Pin

Before the SAAV Cleat can be used to support fiberglass extension tubes, the retention pin must be removed. Unclasp the wire on the retention pin and remove it from the SAAV Cleat. A fiberglass extension tube coupler needs to be attached to the top end of the tube to be supported.

Step 2 - Slide SAAV Cleat Onto Fiberglass Extension Tube

Slide the SAAV Cleat over the fiberglass extension tube and rest it on top of the borehole casing. Rest the fiberglass extension tube fastener in the SAAV Cleat’s grooves.

Replace the retention pin. The array is now securely suspended within the casing.

Step 3 - Add Fiberglass Extension Tube

Slide a fiberglass extension tube onto the coupler. Ensure the X-mark on the extension tube being added aligns with the existing extension tube.

Insert and tighten the fasteners for the fiberglass extension tube.

Step 4 - Repeat for Each Fiberglass Extension to be Added

Repeat steps 1 through 3 until the desired number of fiberglass extension tubes have been added.
