Measurand SAAV's are shipped with one of two installation configurations depending on the size of the conduit being used for installation:

  • 27 mm ID conduit - Conduit adapter
  • 47 mm to 100 mm ID conduit - Springbox assembly

More information about the SAAV installation configuration is available in the SAAV Construction section of the SAAV Manual.

It is possible to field refit the installation configuration should the size of the installation conduit be different from that specified at the time of order. To perform this refit, a 5/8" wrench and an adjustable pipe wrench will be required. Measurand also recommends having a thread locker or sealer, such as Red Loctite.

Refitting the SAAV's top configuration will require the cabling to be freed from the interior of the ShapeArray reel. For short lengths of cabling, such as the standard 15 m length from the factory, this can be accomplished by taking the following actions.

  1. Remove the zip tie securing the top segment to the reel
  2. Lift the top segment from the reel
  3. Remove the zip tie securing the cabling to the reel
  4. Pull the cabling out between the resulting gap

For longer lengths of cabling, it will not be possible to pull the cabling through such a small gap and the field refit will need to be done with the SAAV partially installed into the borehole. Measurand recommends refitting the top configuration with the SAAV securely placed on the factory reel if possible.

Option 1: Changing from Conduit Adapter to Springbox Assembly

Step 1 - Remove the Conduit Adapter

Place the 5/8" wrench on the flats just below the Coupler. With the adjustable pipe wrench on the coupler, unscrew the Conduit Adapter from the cable terminator segment. This will require significant force. Remove any connector on the end of the cabling and pull the cabling completely through the Conduit Adapter.

NOTE: Care should be taken to protect the cable from being damaged by the threads of the coupler. Lining the threaded portion of the coupler with a thin plastic or paper to prevent abrasion of the cable jacket as the installation hardware is removed is highly recommended.

Step 2 - Connect the Springbox

Thread the cabling through the connector on the Springbox assembly. Pull the cable through until the Springbox can be attached to the threading on the Cable Terminator.

NOTE: Care should be taken to protect the cable from being damaged by the threads of the coupler. Lining the threaded portion of the coupler with a thin plastic or paper to prevent abrasion of the cable jacket as the installation hardware is threaded over the cabling is highly recommended.

NOTE: Measurand recommends using a thread sealer, such as red Loctite, on the threads of the Cable Terminator prior to attaching the Springbox.

Place the 5/8" wrench on the flats of the Cable Terminator and the adjustable wrench on the Springbox assembly. Using the wrenches, screw the Springbox assembly to Cable Terminator. This will require a significant amount of force and the X-mark on the Springbox assembly will not align with the X-mark on the cable terminator.

Step 3 - Measure the Offset between the Cable Terminator's X-Mark and the Springbox's X-Mark

Once the Springbox has been secured to the Cable Terminator, the X-Mark on the SAAV will likely not align with the X-Mark on the Springbox. The offset between these X-marks should be measured so that azimuth offset can properly be determined when the SAAV is installed.

Place the square white portion of the protractor around the Springbox assembly and align the arrows to the direction of the X-Mark on the Cable Terminator segment. Place the clear portion of the protractor over the square white portion and align the X-Line with the X-Mark on the Springbox assembly. Record the angle value. This will need to be added to the measured azimuth offset when the SAAV is installed.

Option 2: Changing from Springbox Assembly to the Conduit Adapter

Step 1 - Remove the Springbox

Place the 5/8" wrench on the flats on the Cable Terminator. With the adjustable pipe, unscrew the Springbox from the Cable Terminator segment. This will require significant force. Remove any connector on the end of the cabling and pull the cabling completely through the Springbox.

NOTE: Care should be taken to protect the cable from being damaged by the threads of the coupler. Lining the threaded portion of the coupler with a thin plastic or paper to prevent abrasion of the cable jacket as the installation hardware is removed is highly recommended.

Step 2 - Connect the Conduit Adapter

Thread the cabling through the Conduit Adapter and PEX tubing. Pull the cable through until the Conduit Adapter can be attached to the threading on the Cable Terminator.

NOTE: Care should be taken to protect the cable from being damaged by the threads of the coupler. Lining the threaded portion of the coupler with a thin plastic or paper to prevent abrasion of the cable jacket as the installation hardware is threaded over the cabling is highly recommended.

NOTE: Measurand recommends using a thread sealer, such as red Loctite, on the threads of the Cable Terminator prior to attaching the Conduit Adapter.

Place the 5/8" wrench on the flats of the Cable Terminator and the adjustable wrench on the Coupler. Using the wrenches, screw the Conduit Adapter to Cable Terminator.  This will require a significant amount of force and the X-mark on the PEX tubing will not align with the X-mark on the cable terminator.

Step 3 - Measure the Offset between the Cable Terminator's X-Mark and the PEX X-Mark

Once the Conduit Adapter has been secured to the Cable Terminator, the X-Mark on the SAAV will likely not align with the X-Mark on the PEX tubing. The offset between these X-marks should be measured so that azimuth offset can properly be determined when the SAAV is installed.

Place the square white portion of the protractor around the PEX tubing and align the arrows to the direction of the X-Mark on the Cable Terminator segment. Place the clear portion of the protractor over the square white portion and align the X-Line with the X-Mark on the PEX tubing. Record the angle value. This will need to be added to the measured azimuth offset when the SAAV is installed.
