Measurand ShapeArrays can be installed horizontally to measure vertical displacement. The procedure for horizontal installation is the same regardless of the model of ShapeArray being used. This installation method requires lengths of 60 mm (2.3") OD, 49 mm (2.0") ID PVC conduit to be assembled, the SAA Horizontal Install Kit, and the ShapeArray to be pulled through. More detailed instructions for horizontally installing each type of ShapeArray are available in their respective manuals:
- Recommended Installation Method for Horizontal SAAF
- Recommended Installation Method for Horizontal SAAX
- Recommended Installation Method for Horizontal SAAV
NOTE: Measurand highly recommends that users perform a complete diagnostics test on their ShapeArray prior to installation to ensure the instrument is working properly. The .TXT report file generated should be included with the installation log for record keeping purposes. A complete diagnostic report from the time of installation could be required to advance warranty claims should an issue occur in the future.
The following table outlines the tools and equipment required to install a ShapeArray horizontally using the SAA Horizontal Install Kit.
Pry Bar | Pipe Cutter | Box Cutter | Phillips Screwdrivers |
Hammer | Duct Tape | Wire Cutters | Ratchet with a 5/16” socket or wrench |
Pliers | PVC Cement and Primer | 2” (5.08 cm) Clamp-On Cap * | Small flat-headed screwdriver |
Shovel | Rope | Horizontal Install Kit Assembly * | Spray bottle with water or water source to flush casing |
Deburring Tools for PVC | Reel Stand and Pole | PEX cutter |
* Starred items are included in the Horizontal installation kit
Step 1 - Prepare the Trench
Dig a trench long enough to hold the ShapeArray. It must be at least 300 mm (1') deep by 300 mm (1') wide. Line the trench with geotextile. Ensure that the geotextile is wide enough to line the trench and wrap over top of the sand, completely enclosing it at the end of the process. Fill the trench with at least 150 mm (0.5') of bedding sand.
Figure 1: ShapeArray trench must be 300 mm (1’) deep by 300 mm (1’) wide.
Step 2 - Assemble the PVC Conduit
Clean and deburr the PVC conduit. Place the ShapeArray reel on a stand such that it unreels from the bottom at one end of the trench. Lay out PVC conduit in the trench. Run a length of rope along the inside of each piece of conduit. Glue and assemble the conduit.
Figure 2: Lay out the PVC conduit in the trench, run a rope through the conduit, and glue the conduit together.
NOTE: The Horizontal Install Kit cannot fit over a coupler. If the conduit has bell ends, remove the bell end from the segment of the conduit closest to the reel by cutting it, making sure to deburr the conduit.
Step 3 - Pull the ShapeArray Into the Conduit
Attach the rope to the eyelet on the end of the ShapeArray and pull it into the conduit. Attach the included end cap. An extra person should be available to guide the instrument from the reel into the conduit as another person is pulling the rope. The person guiding the ShapeArray into the conduit should apply water to the ShapeArray to help lubricate it and keep friction low while it is being pulled into the conduit.
NOTE: SAAV up to 90 m and SAAX up to 144m no longer have steel braid on them. To ensure a smooth transition from the reel into the conduit, water should be used as a lubricant to reduce friction. One way to apply water to the instrument is with a spray bottle as segments come off the reel and are pulled into the conduit. Alternatively, a small amount of water can be flushed through the conduit prior to pulling the ShapeArray into it.
Figure 3: Pull the ShapeArray into the conduit.
Step 4 - Attach the Horizontal Install Kit
If you are installing an SAAV or SAAX Model 002 or older horizontally, you will need to trim the PEX on the ShapeArray such that 100 mm (4") to 125 mm (5") of the PEX is protruding from the conduit.
Figure 4. Attach the Horizontal Install Kit to SAAV or SAAX Model 002 or older
For SAAX model 003 and newer, ensure the cable terminator segment is protruding from the conduit. Ensure the compression rings / pipe clamps are loose on the Horizontal Install Kit, and slide it over the cable, the cable terminator segment, and onto the conduit. Tighten the compression rings / pipe clamps to secure the Horizontal Install Kit to the conduit.

Insert and tighten the set screws into the Horizontal Install Kit. Tighten the cable gland on the top of the Horizontal Install Kit. Run the cabling to the data acquisition system (DAS) and connect to a data logging solution.
Step 5 - Fill and Cover the Trench
Cover the ShapeArray with at least 150 mm (0.5') of bedding sand and add fill to cover the trench.
